El Paso 22 (23) Wabi Sabi Exhibition - August 2019 O'Hanlon Center for the Arts, Mill Valley To honor those lives that were taken those harmed and in sorrow and all the connections with family, friends, community and reaching beyond. In our grief outrage we find strength |
El Paso 22 (23) was created while listening to a radio segment announcing twenty-two names, followed by a brief story about their lives before they were killed; especially what they did for others. More than a few sacrificed their own lives at the last moment to shield another. Most were valued caregivers; bright, thoughtful and generous people. Our lives circle and connect with others. Some connections exist across the air, without seeing their smiles, meeting their eyes or hearing their voices. But how they touch us in ways beyond measure. |

Be grateful -- Aotearoa -- May I be filled with loving kindness -- May I be well, May I be happy, May I be peaceful and at ease -- The majesty of nature -- Peace -- Spirit -- Tundra (single word haiku) -- To have friends, first you must be a friend -- People do not grow old, when they stop growing they become old -- Tikkun Olam -- Carpe Diem -- Imagine -- Happiness -- Patience -- It's not about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain -- Lone, Lose, Love -- People who talk to themselves have a captive audience -- Life is a beautiful journey -- Each day is a gift -- Think positive -- If you don't like the news, go out and make your own -- Gaman -- Gratitude -- Ichi-go Ichi-e. The deepest friendships often comes through a chance meeting (The Seven Samurai) -- Mono no aware -- Ties that bind -- Run your own race --"The torment of a flower" - Taiwanese song -- Life is a mirror which magnifies. What you see out there is only a duplication of what you are inside. The vibrations you send forth are magnified by life and returned to you -- it is unethical to take something's life for food, when there is an abundance of much healthier food available -- How to live healthy is so simple that it is complex -- If ignorance is bliss why aren't more people blissful -- Love unites us, fear divides us -- Gambatte ... The Community Teen Program - "The teens talked about it during their Teen Talk. Used the words that were [submitted]; some they had to look-up. They talked about them and started to think about various aspects that could affect them. They came up with some of their own sayings...Be yourself, Everyone is already taken. Be You. Always be Loyal... Overall, they had a very positive conversation and talked about uplifting, not only their friends, but others who need it as well."

"One cannot effect change unless it is addressed in an ongoing manner. It is interesting to see the word/phrases that were important to the youth - such as "be yourself." This is the time when they are trying to find an identity and when friends are so very important."

Endless Vision - a part of the Honor the Earth (Tokyo) series. 2019
Some thoughts on the Circle, Triangle, Square...
In the Circle we find infinity…
In zen, the circle - enso - is both the beginning and the end.
And walking through the center of the circle is to enter emptiness;
a void of thoughts or emotions, yet being fully present in the moment.
Circles are everywhere…from our galaxy of Earth, sun, moon, planets
and beyond, the countless galaxies and orbits ever expanding…
to our humble cups and bowls that help nourish us daily.
Even the small circular waves from a single water drop falling on a still pond.
The Triangle …
Balanced and stable like a pyramid.
A monk sitting in meditation.
The peak of a mountain or spiraling fire.
All grounded and yet ascending skyward.
The Square …
A sense of contentment.
Four solid walls for places where we live, work and rest.
A frame of a passage way to another thought, another way.
Like a threshold we cross upon entering a doorway
Into another space.
All things in the universe are represented in these forms.
Where do you see them in your daily life?
Are there other symbols, shapes and patterns that attract you?
